Astrology booms as billion-dollar business in India

Astrology booms as billion-dollar business in India - astrology booms
AstroTalk is one of the most successful digital astrology platforms in India.

Traditional businesses in India that once operated largely offline have found a much bigger platform to reach customers. One of the most unexpected industries to benefit is astrology. For decades, astrology was a practice conducted outside temples or in small shops. The rise of digital platforms connecting astrologers with clients has transformed it into a business that some estimate could be worth as much as $7 billion.

The scale of this growth is evident in the success of AstroTalk. The bootstrapped company, which started in 2017, became a unicorn with a valuation of $1 billion just a few months ago. This milestone confirms that astrology is at least a billion-dollar industry in India.

Startups and the Pandemic Boom

The shift began about a decade ago when startups realised faith was a huge market with a gap in how astrologers connected with their clients. Companies like AstroTalk emerged to create marketplaces, solving the problem of relying on word-of-mouth or advertisements. The real boom came during the pandemic. When people faced uncertainty over health and business, they sought answers about the future. Unable to leave their homes, they found it easy to connect with astrologers through apps.

This period became an inflection point. Repeat users on these platforms began spending three times as much each month. Venture capitalists took notice. For instance, Left Lane Capital, a New York-based firm, invested $20 million in AstroTalk in 2024. This funding allowed astrotech startups to scale up significantly, spending more on technology, marketing, and operations. Just a year after the investment, AstroTalk’s total expenses more than doubled from ₹542 crore in FY24 to ₹1,129 crore in FY25.

Young Users and a New Market

A second key factor is the growing interest among young people. Around 84% of AstroTalk’s 7 crore users are below 35 years old. Their most frequent question is, “When will my ex come back?” Nearly 65% of AstroTalk’s revenue comes from users seeking advice about marriage. To keep them engaged, platforms offer free initial minutes of advice, often ending on a cliffhanger that nudges users to pay for more. Consultations with popular astrologers can cost as much as ₹250 per minute, with an average order value of around ₹210.

These platforms are also attractive for astrologers. They can potentially offer three times the earnings of independent practice, even after giving a cut to the platform. The business model, however, is not limited to consultations. Astrotech platforms now sell certified gemstones, crystals, jewellery, and Vastu products on their own sites and marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart. While this segment contributes less than 10% of AstroTalk’s operating revenue, it has quadrupled to ₹166 crore in FY26.

A final ingredient in the astrotech boom is the growing interest in astrology among people who trade and invest in financial markets. The tradition of Muhurat Trading, a special session on Diwali timed around an auspicious hour, is a long-standing practice. However, astrology’s influence extends beyond this ritual. During the 2008 financial crisis, financial astrologers had already secured TV slots and influenced retail investors. Google searches for astrology tend to spike when markets fall. When the pandemic hit, searches for “astrology” reached peak popularity, and some astrologers reported a 25-30% increase in calls.

This growing interest caught the attention of market regulator SEBI, which has fined and banned people offering stock tips based on astrology. Astrologers have found a workaround by predicting broad sectoral trends instead of specific stock recommendations. With financial markets struggling lately, this has translated into more business for astrotech platforms. AstroTalk’s revenue surged by 55% to ₹1,823 crore in FY26, and its net profit jumped from ₹22 crore to ₹222 crore.

AI and the Future of Astrotech

Another key driver is artificial intelligence. AI can process vast amounts of astrological data. This allows platforms to answer more questions than human astrologers alone could manage. The technology makes complex calculations faster and more accessible to a wider audience.

AI could potentially accelerate the industry’s growth even further. It helps astrotech platforms scale their services. This might lead to new features, like automated horoscope reports or instant chat consultations. The integration of AI is becoming a central part of business strategy for these companies.

The rise of AI also brings new challenges. Ensuring the accuracy of automated readings is a major concern. Platforms must balance technology with the personal touch that many users seek. Astrologers themselves may need to adapt to working alongside AI tools.

The success of AstroTalk and its peers has proven that there is a strong market for these services. With continued investment and technological advancements, the astrotech industry is poised for further expansion. The fusion of ancient practices and modern technology shows no signs of slowing down.
